Special Election for Senate District 35 Set

When Chris Cournoyer became Iowa's Lt. Governor, she had to leave her Senate seat in the middle of the four-year term.  Iowans living in Senate District 35 will go the polls again on Tuesday, January 28 to select a new State Senator.  The following candidates were selected to run by their political party.  Others not affiliated with a political party may also choose to run.


  • Mike Zimmer of DeWitt is running as the Democrat.  He is currently the Central DeWitt School Board President, is a small business owner, and volunteer driver coordinator at Humble Dwellings.  Learn more on his Facebook page.


  • Katie Whittington lives in Clinton County and is running as the Republican.  She is Vice President of Health Freedom Iowa, a nonprofit organization advocating for alternative health and opposed to vaccine mandates.  Learn more about her here


You can learn more about the candidates at a public forum hosted by Grow Clinton and the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, January 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Clinton County Satellite Office (226 11th Street in DeWitt) . The forum will also be live-streamed on Youtube.com/@GrowClintonCountyIowa.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  You can submit questions to be asked at this forum to Angela arheingans@dewittiowa.org or mparbs@growclinton.com.


....... IMPORTANT SPECIAL ELECTION DATES .......



  • Monday, Jan. 13 (5 pm)
  • “Worry free” postmark date for mailed voter registrations (if you are not already registered to vote). After this day, person may register to vote in auditor’s office or satellite absentee voting station using the same process as registering to vote on Election Day.


  • Absentee ballot request deadline. Auditor’s offices will be open 8 am to 5 pm on this day.  Requests for mailed absentee ballot must be received by 5 p.m. on this day.


  • Saturday, Jan. 25 
  • Auditors offices are open for early voting for at least eight hours.  Note that early voting will be available Monday-Friday in auditor's offices as well.


  • Monday, Jan. 27
  • Last day for in person early voting at Auditor’s offices.


  • Tuesday, Jan. 28 is Election Day.
  • Polls open 7 am—8 pm
  • Absentee ballots may be delivered to county auditor’s office until 8 pm.
  • Any ballots received after 8 pm will not be counted.
