Absentee Voter Request Information

REGISTER TO VOTE
BY MAIL: Visit www.sos.iowa.gov, a county courthouse, a driver’s license station, or state offices serving people with disabilities for a voter registration form. Send the completed form to your county auditor’s office by 5 pm on October 24, 2020.
ONLINE: If you have an Iowa driver’s license or nonoperator ID, you may register to vote online, at www.sos.iowa.gov.
ABSENTEE VOTING BY MAIL
Registered voters may request an absentee ballot to be sent to them by mail. Complete an absentee ballot request form and return the original, signed form to your county auditor’s office. The request form does not need to be witnessed or notarized.
Those who will be 18 years old by November 3, 2020, may request an absentee ballot if they are pre-registered to vote in the upcoming general election.
REQUEST DEADLINE FOR MAILED BALLOTS
For the general election, the request form must be received in the county auditor’s office by 5 pm on Saturday, October 24, 2020. However, your are encouraged to submit the form early so the auditor has time to mail the ballot to you.
If the request form is received late and is unlikely that the absentee ballot can be returned by mail in time to be counted, the county auditor will enclose a statement to that effect with the absentee ballot.
RECEIVING THE BALLOT
After receiving an absentee ballot request form, the county auditor will mail the voter their absentee ballot. With the ballot, the county auditor will include instructions on how to mark the ballot as well as how to return the ballot.
VOTING IN IOWA: IMPORTANT DATES & DEADLINES
JULY 6 - OCTOBER 24 Request Absentee Ballot
Monday, July 6th is the first day you can request an absentee ballot for the 2020 general election.
OCTOBER 5 - NOVEMBER 2 Early / Absentee Voting
Vote in Iowa in-person at your county auditor’s office or by mail between October 5 and November 2, 2020.
OCTOBER 24 Deadline to Request Absentee Ballot
The ballot request form must be received in your county auditor’s office by 5 pm on October 24, 2020.
OCTOBER 24 Voter Registration Deadline
October 24, 2020, is the last day you can register to vote prior to the general election. However, you can register to vote in-person on election day.
NOVEMBER 2 Absentee Ballot Postmark Date
If mailing your absentee ballot, it must be postmarked by November 2, 2020.
NOVEMBER 3 General Election Day
Register to vote and vote on the same day at the polls on November 3, 2020, between 7 am and 9 pm.
